MATA Admissions Guide: Eligibility, Pathways, and Selection

MATA is a winter admissions option for current high school students, not an eighth grade fall pathway. Under the current LCPS structure, eighth graders apply to AOS and AET in the fall. Current ninth, 10th, and 11th graders may explore eligible Monroe Advanced Technical Academy pathways during the winter cycle.

That correction matters because two older versions of this guide told eighth grade families to choose a MATA pathway. They should not build a plan around that advice. MATA eligibility depends on the student's current high school grade and the length and requirements of a specific pathway.

The short version

Start with the student's current grade, then review the active pathway list and winter criteria. The current FAQ discusses resumes, career goal statements, and score reports, but it does not publish the next cycle's complete selection mechanism. A 2025 LCPS page described a random lottery, which should be treated as historical until LCPS confirms the new cycle.

Who applies to MATA, and when

The central LCPS admissions page separates the process into two cycles:

Cycle Current applicant grade Programs
Fall Eighth grade only AOS and AET
Winter Ninth, 10th, and 11th grade Eligible MATA pathways and Advanced AET

The table summarizes the current central LCPS structure. It does not mean every MATA pathway is open to every high school grade. Families need the active pathway chart to see which one-year and two-year programs fit the student's entry grade and remaining schedule.

All applicants must reside in Loudoun County. If admitted, students remain full-time at their home high school and attend ACL as part of their schedule. Students may participate in only one ACL curricular program at a time.

How MATA pathway choices work

The official MATA page presents career and technical education as the center of the program. Course designations vary by pathway and can include academic, honors, or dual-enrollment coursework.

According to the current FAQ, applicants can change AET or MATA pathway choices only while the application window is open. They are not guaranteed their first choice and may be offered a second or third choice. That makes pathway ranking a real decision, not a decorative preference list.

AcademiesPrep interpretation

Rank a pathway because the student would genuinely accept and complete it, not because someone claims it is easier to enter. A backup choice that the student does not want is not much of a backup.

Families should compare at least four things before ranking:

  1. the student's current grade and pathway eligibility;
  2. whether the pathway lasts one year or two;
  3. the home-school courses and graduation requirements it must fit around;
  4. whether the student wants the daily work, not just the pathway name.

What is known, and not known, about MATA selection

A dated LCPS page for the 2025 winter cycle stated that all MATA seats were filled through a random lottery. That is valid evidence about that named historical cycle. It is not a safe basis for writing “MATA uses a lottery” as a permanent present-tense rule.

The current central FAQ explains pathway preferences, documents, score-report substitutions, and waitlists, but it does not state the next cycle's complete MATA selection mechanism. Until LCPS publishes the active winter criteria, the responsible answer is that the mechanism has not yet been confirmed publicly for the next cycle.

This distinction also keeps families from importing the fall AOS and AET test process into MATA. The fall STEM Thinking Skills Assessment and Writing Assessment rules apply to current eighth grade AOS and AET applicants. MATA families should use the winter packet for their own requirements.

What a MATA family can prepare without guessing

The current FAQ gives a practical starting list:

  • MATA applicants upload a resume and career goal statement as PDFs through the application portal.
  • Applicants without a PSAT score report may submit an SAT or ACT score report before the published deadline.
  • Ninth grade MATA applicants may substitute PSAT 8/9 for PSAT/NMSQT.
  • Some dual-enrollment pathways can require additional registration steps after admission.

These are current FAQ directions, but the active packet still controls what a particular pathway requires. Build clean source files now, then verify each upload, score, and deadline when the winter application opens.

A useful career goal statement starts with fit

Before drafting, the student should be able to explain why the work of the pathway is appealing. “It looks good for college” is too distant from the actual experience. A clearer answer connects the student's curiosity, prior exposure, and next questions to the skills the pathway teaches.

A useful resume is accurate before it is impressive

List experiences the student can explain honestly. Use concrete verbs, dates, and responsibilities. Do not inflate a brief exposure into expertise. The resume should help the reader understand the student's preparation and interests, not force every activity into a technical theme.

Most importantly, do not spend months preparing for an assumed lottery or assessment. Wait for LCPS to publish the next selection rules, then match the work to the actual process.

MATA Admissions Guide FAQs

Can current eighth graders apply to MATA?

Not in the current LCPS admissions structure. The fall cycle is for current eighth graders applying to AOS or AET. MATA is part of the winter cycle for current ninth, 10th, and 11th grade applicants, subject to pathway-specific eligibility.

Does MATA use a random lottery?

A dated LCPS page for the 2025 winter cycle said all MATA seats were filled through a random lottery. The current central FAQ does not publish a next-cycle selection mechanism, so families should wait for the active winter criteria rather than assume the historical rule is unchanged.

Are applicants guaranteed their first MATA pathway choice?

No. The current LCPS FAQ says applicants are not guaranteed their first pathway choice and may be offered their second or third choice.

What documents should a MATA applicant expect?

The current FAQ discusses a PDF resume, a PDF career goal statement, and a PSAT score report, with SAT or ACT substitution when no PSAT report is available. Ninth grade MATA applicants may use PSAT 8/9. The active cycle packet controls the final required documents and deadlines.
