    The LCPS Grade Scale

    These are the quality points LCPS publishes. Honors adds 0.5 and AP and dual enrollment add 1.0 to every grade except an F.

    What Counts, and What Doesn’t

    Middle school GPA
    LCPS does not calculate a GPA for middle school students, even if they have taken a high school credit course.
    Middle school honors
    Classes marked Honors in middle school are not weighted.
    High school credit taken in middle school
    Courses such as Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and a world language taken for high school credit in middle school count toward the high school GPA.
    Academies of Loudoun courses
    The Program of Studies says AOS and AET courses are weighted by either 0.5 or 1.0, and LCPS says every AOS and AET course is honors level or above. Pick the weight shown for the course. MATA courses vary: choose Standard, Honors, or Dual enrollment to match the course.
    Repeated courses and F grades
    When a course is repeated, both final grades count toward the GPA. An F counts as 0 points with its full credit, and it is never weighted.
    MATA’s minimum GPA
    MATA applicants need a GPA of at least 2.0, or 3.0 for some dual-enrollment courses when Northern Virginia Community College requires it. LCPS does not say whether that means the weighted or unweighted GPA. The eligibility checker covers the rest of the MATA requirements.
    During the school year
    After semester 1, the GPA in ParentVUE also includes semester grades from year-long courses still in progress, at half their yearly credit.

    LCPS GPA: Common Questions

    How does LCPS calculate GPA?

    LCPS multiplies the points for each final grade by the course credit, adds them up, and divides by the total credits of all courses taken, passed or not. Only high school credit courses count, including those taken in middle school.

    Is an A+ worth 4.3 in LCPS?

    Yes. On the LCPS high school scale an A+ is 4.3, an A is 4.0, and an A- is 3.7. With Honors weighting an A+ is 4.8, and with AP or dual enrollment it is 5.3.

    Why does the TJ GPA calculator count a Loudoun A+ as 4.0?

    Because it calculates a different number. For TJ eligibility, FCPS computes a core GPA on its own unweighted scale, which tops out at an A worth 4.0, so our TJ calculator converts a Loudoun A+ to 4.0. That conversion is only for TJ. LCPS’s own high school GPA counts an A+ as 4.3.

    Are Academies of Loudoun courses weighted?

    AOS and AET courses are weighted by 0.5 or 1.0, according to the Program of Studies, and every AOS and AET course is honors level or above. MATA courses vary between academic, honors, and dual enrollment. Check the course listing or the transcript for the exact weight.

    Does LCPS calculate a middle school GPA?

    No. LCPS does not calculate GPAs for middle school students, and middle school honors classes are not weighted. High school credit courses taken in middle school do count toward the high school GPA later.

    What GPA does MATA require?

    At least 2.0, or 3.0 for some dual-enrollment courses when Northern Virginia Community College requires it. AOS and AET have no GPA minimum; they require a C or higher in specific middle school math and science courses.
