That is the pacing trap. Students often spend too long protecting one difficult question, then rush several manageable questions at the end. A better plan treats time as a resource to allocate, not a countdown to fear.

The official format, without the rumors
LCPS states that the STEM Thinking Skills Assessment is completed online and allows 50 minutes for 33 multiple-choice questions. Insight Assessment describes the test as 33 graphic and scenario-based questions designed to measure scientific and technological thinking.
Neither source publishes an official seconds-per-question rule, an item order, or a recommended skipping strategy. The plan below is AcademiesPrep guidance based on the published format. Students should also follow the directions and platform controls presented in their actual test session.
What the 91-second average really means
Fifty minutes is 3,000 seconds. Dividing by 33 gives about 90.9 seconds per item. That average is useful for diagnosing pacing after practice, but it is a poor stopwatch rule during the test.
Some questions may become clear quickly. Others may require reading a scenario, tracing a relationship, or testing answer choices. If a student forces both kinds into the same time box, they can leave easy time unused and cut off productive reasoning on a harder item.
Use the average as a dashboard, not a leash
After a timed set, compare total time with completed work. During the set, watch for a more important signal: is the student still making progress, or repeating the same unproductive move?

Pass 1: collect the clean starts
Read carefully, solve questions with a visible path, and avoid turning a moment of uncertainty into a long negotiation. If the student cannot name the next useful step, mark the question when the platform permits and move on.
A clean start does not mean an easy question. It means the student can identify what is being asked and has a defensible way to begin.
Pass 2: return with a fresh representation
For a marked question, do not simply repeat the first attempt. Change something. Draw the relationship, list the conditions, estimate, test an answer choice, or rewrite the question in plain language. A second pass should be a new approach, not another minute of the same one.
Pass 3: protect completion and review
Use the final window to confirm every item has a response if the test directions allow it, revisit flagged uncertainty, and check for condition words such as except, must, or most supported. Do not use all remaining time to polish one answer while leaving avoidable omissions elsewhere.
This is a decision framework, not an official LCPS sequence. Its value is that a student can rehearse it before test day and adjust it from practice evidence.
How to practice pacing without turning every session into a full test
- Start with a short timed set. Ten or eleven questions are enough to expose a pacing habit without exhausting the student.
- Mark the time of each decision. Record when the student began a question, when progress stopped, and when the student chose to move.
- Classify the delay. Was it slow reading, unclear setup, inefficient execution, or reluctance to leave?
- Redo only after changing the process. A faster second attempt proves little if the student remembers the answer. Use a new problem that requires the same pacing decision.
The best review question is not “Why were you slow?” It is “At what moment did your next action stop being useful?” That gives the student a signal they can recognize next time.
